"Alternating ductile and brittle cracking mode in 3rd generation steels : Is it detrimental to toughness ?" by Thibaut HEREMANS24 MayThe last decades have shown impressive progress regarding the strength and ductility compromise of steels. Yet, the resulting refined and complex microstructures lead to fracture mechanisms which are not captured by traditional forming and failure indicators.En savoir plus"Alternating ductile and brittle cracking mode in 3rd generation steels : Is it detrimental to toughness ?" by Thibaut HEREMANS24 MayThe last decades have shown impressive progress regarding the strength and ductility compromise of steels. Experimental and numerical studies on landslide dam failure and the induced flood and morphological changes by Jiangtao YANG15 MayLandslide dams are natural dams that are formed by the blockage of a river channel with landslides, rock falls and debris flows. Landslide dams are prone to overtopping failure shortly after their formation, resulting in catastrophic floods in the downstream areas, further posing a great danger to the local residents and altering the local environment.En savoir plusExperimental and numerical studies on landslide dam failure and the induced flood and morphological changes by Jiangtao YANG15 MayLandslide dams are natural dams that are formed by the blockage of a river channel with landslides, rock falls and debris flows. Techno-Economics of Variable-Speed Pumped Hydro Energy Storage by Thomas MERCIER03 MayIn the midst of the ongoing transformation in power systems driven by the shift to renewable energy, finding effective ways to balance electricity supply and demand is crucial. Energy storage plays a pivotal role in addressing this challenge, and among the established technologies, pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) stands out as the most mature and widespread.En savoir plusTechno-Economics of Variable-Speed Pumped Hydro Energy Storage by Thomas MERCIER03 MayIn the midst of the ongoing transformation in power systems driven by the shift to renewable energy, finding effective ways to balance electricity supply and demand is crucial. Corrosion study of the BR1 fuel in highly alkaline conditions by Xiang LI30 AprOne possible route for the geological disposal of the Belgian reactor 1 (BR1) fuel, which will eventually become nuclear waste, could be the direct encapsulation of the whole fuel capsule in a cementitious matrix. Because the cladding of the BR1 fuel is made of aluminium alloy 1100 (AA1100), this alloy would be in direct contact with the cementitious matrix.En savoir plusCorrosion study of the BR1 fuel in highly alkaline conditions by Xiang LI30 AprOne possible route for the geological disposal of the Belgian reactor 1 (BR1) fuel, which will eventually become nuclear waste, could be the direct encapsulation of the whole fuel capsule in a cementitious matrix. Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for River and Delta flow simulations by Insaf Draoui19 AprUnderstanding and predicting the hydrodynamics of river systems is a challenging, yet crucial task for managing the land-sea continuum. Considering the goal of maintaining an acceptable accuracy level with acceptable calculation time, various modeling approaches can be investigated to address this challenge.En savoir plusDiscontinuous Galerkin Methods for River and Delta flow simulations by Insaf Draoui19 AprUnderstanding and predicting the hydrodynamics of river systems is a challenging, yet crucial task for managing the land-sea continuum. "Poisson Solvers for Exascale Platforms" by Paul Fischer19 AprWe discuss Poisson solver design and performance for exascale (here, GPU-based) platforms in the context of computational fluid dynamics, where factor once, solve many, applies. We are particularly focused on the range of 103-105 MPI ranks, where each rank is associated with a GPU capable of realizing ~ 1 TFLOPS.En savoir plus"Poisson Solvers for Exascale Platforms" by Paul Fischer19 AprWe discuss Poisson solver design and performance for exascale (here, GPU-based) platforms in the context of computational fluid dynamics, where factor once, solve many, applies. CANCELLED Better planning spine surgeries thanks to patient specific biomechanical models18 AprSpinal deformities are one of the most mechanically disabling pathology for the human body. Resolving spinal deformities using surgery is difficult, sensitive and frequently leads to the necessity to perform corrective surgeries.En savoir plusCANCELLED Better planning spine surgeries thanks to patient specific biomechanical models18 AprSpinal deformities are one of the most mechanically disabling pathology for the human body. That’s a vortex (probably)!15 AprThere are many examples in fluid dynamics in which we wish to use a limited amount of information about a flow (e.g., from sensors) to infer its larger behavior. Rather than treat this inverse problem deterministically, it is valuable to embrace its uncertainty, e.g., due to noisy sensor measurements, and work in a probabilistic setting.En savoir plusThat’s a vortex (probably)!15 AprThere are many examples in fluid dynamics in which we wish to use a limited amount of information about a flow (e.g., from sensors) to infer its larger behavior.
